12 Physics Activity :Diffraction

Measure the distance between the central spot and first and second bright spot for a given value of

a distance between grating and screen. Hence determine d.

Diffraction pattern using a laser beam

Aim : To determine the grating element (d) of the given grating.

Apparatus: Diffraction grating , laser pointer, stands , screen and meter scale.

Formula: nλ = d sin θ

Where λ = the wavelength of the laser light.

d = grating element

θ = the angle of diffraction.

Observation:

1. Wavelength of the laser light used (red) : λ=6328 Ao = 6.328 x 10-5 cm

Observation Table:

Note the experiment can be done by single slit method using D>1.5 m

Result: The grating element of diffraction grating is d= 15..555 x 10-5 cm.
